Heat Treatment
Rapid current heat treatment has been successfully applied to cold-rolled sheets of commercially pure titanium (CP Ti). Current heat treatment was carried out at various temperatures (400, 500, 600 and 700 C) by varying the current density (A/mm2). The detailed microstructure and texture evolution were investigated using electron backscattering and X-ray diffraction analyses. For comparison, conventional heat treatment temperatures of 400, 500 and 600C were also applied to cold-rolled sheets. Compared with the conventionally heat-treated samples, the electrothermally-treated samples showed much smaller and uniform grain size with a relatively weaker texture. As a result, the electrothermally treated samples exhibited better tensile properties than conventionally heat-treated samples. Furthermore, electric current treatment produces minimal sheet deformation and good oxidation resistance compared to conventional heat treatment.
Generally speaking, titanium content higher than 95% becomes industrial pure titanium. Pure titanium is divided into TA1-TA4 according to the titanium content and impurity content. We usually see TA1 and TA2 more commonly. Impurities are mainly oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, iron and so on. The higher the titanium content, the softer it is, the lower the strength we say, but the better its toughness.
