Titanium alloys are used in both airframe structures and jet engine components because of their moderate weight, high structural properties (e.g. stiffness, strength, toughness, fatigue), excellent corrosion resistance, and the ability to retain their mechanical properties at high temperature. Various types of titanium alloys with different compositions are used, although the most common is Ti–6Al–4 V which is used in both aircraft structures and engines.
The structural properties of titanium are better than aluminium, although it is also more expensive and heavier. Titanium is generally used in the most heavily-loaded structures that must occupy minimum space, such as the landing gear and wing-fuselage connections.
Due to its unprecedented strength, light weight, market stability and non-corrosive properties, titanium has become the metal of choice for aerospace, industrial and medical, recreational and consumer products, especially golf clubs and bicycle frames. In addition, the automotive industry has discovered that the use of titanium for connecting rods and moving parts can significantly improve fuel efficiency.

Ti-6Al-4V is the most widely used titanium alloy because it can be heat treated to different strength levels, is easy to weld, and is relatively easy to machine. The many uses for Ti-6Al-4V include blades and discs for aircraft turbines and compressors, rocket engine casings, marine components, steam turbine blades, structural forgings and fasteners. To improve durability, a range of thermal, mechanical, chemical, and other treatments have been developed to alter surface properties, and a wealth of data is available on their use and performance.
Applications
Titanium alloys can also be used as fuel and oxidant storage tanks and high-pressure containers.
Automatic rifles, mortar mounts and launch tubes for recoilless guns are now made of titanium alloys.
In the petroleum industry, it is mainly used for various containers, reactors, heat exchangers, distillation columns, pipes, pumps and valves.
Titanium is used as electrodes and condensers in power stations and as environmental pollution control devices.
